The Global Book Club will be taking a look at a piece of contemporary history that has affected many Plymouth residents.
Sherard Cowper-Coles served as a senior diplomat for Britain in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2010.
His memoir tells the story of the many people who worked to bring peace to a troubled country: Afghan and British, civilians and soldiers. Among them were Plymouth’s 42 Commando Royal Marines, who served tours of duty in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2011.

Underwood is one of the three hamlets that make up the parish of Plympton St Mary. When cholera came to the area in 1832 villagers tried to keep it spreading but inevitably there were some casualties.
