Undergroove

A Bank Holiday treat, French jazz funk band Undergroove is taking a Spring trip to Cornwall from their native Rennes.

Featuring trumpeter Martin Capon, drummer Joey Brusquet, Thomas Hurtel on bass, guitarist Youn Lohmann and Manon Benoit-Gonin on vocals, flute and percussion.

Expect a mind blowing yet melodic sound, with tonal resonance that allows constant evolution and improvisation. Without doubt Undergroove is a group to be appreciated live, with a confluence of sounds and rhythms to exhilarate and inspire.

Kris Drever’s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today’s contemporary roots scene. Widely admired as a solo artist, collaborator, and member of folk superstars Lau, he is a phenomenal and prolific artist.

Lau scored a triple hit of ‘Best Group’ crowns at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards over consecutive years, whilst releasing more celebrated albums – most notably Arc Light, a powerful set which contained Kris’s stunning original, ‘Winter Moon’.

Gallery Bar Special with the Jade Gall Quartet – A Tribute to Billie Holiday

Jade is joined by three more stars of the south west jazz scene. Guitarist Neil Burns and bassist Kevin Sanders are both regular accompanists to Jim Mullen and Steve Waterman. Kevin is also part of the Martin Dale Quartet. The trio is completed by drummer Ric Byer from the Louise Parker Quartet.

Classically trained Jade is a regular on the Plymouth jazz scene including Michael Campari and the Solar System.

Raise the Roof! Solar Schools Concert

Solar Schools presents an evening with The Sky Walkers, a seven piece band performing a lively mix of rock, pop, folk, jazz and R&B – mostly covers designed to get you moving and having a good time. They’re great musicians and singers from West Devon and East Cornwall, playing songs you know and love!

The band is appearing in support of Calstock Community Primary School which is raising money to install 10kW solar panels on its roof – a project that’s inspiring the community to work together.

Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June: Cornwall Contemporary Poetry Festival Falmouth Poetry Group presents this two-day celebration of the best in new poetry, including readings and workshops from some of the UK’s most exciting poets. A brand new poetry competition accompanies the festival, judged by internationally acclaimed poet Imtiaz Dharker.

Violinist Rebekka Hartmann has won several national and international prizes and performed as a soloist with the Nürnberger Sinfoniker, the Philharmonic Orchestra Klausenburg and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. In 2012 she gave her debut at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall with the violin concerto by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. Her latest CD “The Birth of the Violin”, (Naxos) with rare solo works by Geminiani, Biber & Guillemain etc. won the Echo Classic Award 2012 for the best solo recording of the year.

Last seen at The Old Chapel supporting indie-pop duo Paper Aeroplanes, Jess makes a welcome return following the release of her new album ‘Langa Langa’ featuring sizzling new songs championed by no less than BBC Radio 2 Folk Show’s Mark Radcliffe.

Expect simple, evocative stories peppered with British folk influences as well as country, blues and world music. After an exciting year playing over one hundred shows in 2013, Jess is steadily building a name for herself as a force to be reckoned with in roots and folk music circles in the UK and in Europe.

Madrigals Weekend and Concert with Helen Porter

This very popular madrigals weekend returns to the Old Chapel for a third year.

The course attracts singers from all over Cornwall who already sing in other choirs, and the standard is high! Practice recordings and scores are available in advance of the weekend for those who would like them.

The weekend will end with a public concert on Sunday 4 May at 4.00pm. Free entry.
