Soil Culture: Deep Roots

Deep Roots presents a series of works by six of the most established international artists who have engaged with soils over many years. It ranges from previously unseen work by Mel Chin, who uses plants to extract heavy metals from contaminated land, to that of Claire Pentecost who has refashioned soil into the shape of gold ingots to reflect its true worth. Individual works by seven British artists working with soils today are also shown.

The History Boys' in ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter, Anslem Kiefer and Georg Baselitz

Dr Christian Weikop examines how three giants of the post-1945 German art scene refigured painting to critically reflect on German history and art history. Dr Weikop, Chancellor’s Fellow in History of Art at the University of Edinburgh, is a specialist in modern and contemporary German art.

His talk accompanies the ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter exhibition at Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery (26 September 2015 – 16 January 2016).

Chez Paulette Coffee House

Following the success of Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip in 2013, we are delighted that it returns as part of this year’s Plymouth International Book Festival.

Artist and Plymouth University Fine Art lecturer Anya Lewin commissioned a replica of her father’s 1950s coffee house in the form of a film set that references the American TV show ’77 Sunset Strip’ which also featured a set of the original Chez Paulette cafe.

Dream Cargo: Stanley Donwood's Artwork for J.G. Ballard Publications

Stanley Donwood, artist and writer, received an email from J.G. Ballard’s publishers asking if he would create cover art and design for 21 of the author’s works. In Donwood’s words:

“As Ballard is both arguably the finest and most peculiar novelist to work in English in the 20th century, and perhaps my favourite writer, the outcome of that email was a foregone conclusion."
