Exhibition: Signpost 6: A String of Theories

Showcasing students work from around Plymouth

Pioneered by the art department at Devonport High School for Girls, the Signpost exhibition is now in its ninth year and enables students from across Plymouth to showcase their work alongside professional artists in a public gallery.

As art students, they have explored concepts that are an integrated part of creative thinking and practice. They have investigated different processes and looked at the intangible and unconscious dialogue that creative thinkers bring to their work – this continues to excite and motivate the Signpost projects.

Art constantly faces challenges in the way it is perceived – artwork is often seen as a purely practical, making process – and this misconception means that first impressions are based on how the audience perceives a work of art. The context, concept and how the process and media work together with the artists’ ideas are formed in our human experiences, and the intellect and academic thinking associated with the work. How the work performs and interacts within the gallery are areas of perception often overlooked.

This all creates a wonderful, visual phenomenon for a collaborative experience for all the exhibiting artists, other artists, and the work in an exhibition in the Cube 3 gallery, in partnership with Peninsula Arts.
