Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts

Great Artists | Great Teachers brings together the work of some of the most significant artists/teachers working across the 20th Century and into the present. Selected as important artists in their own right, each of the artists are recognised as being hugely influential art teachers, helping to shape the direction of art education and inspiring the next generation of artists.

Trans-form – Trevor Bell

Trans-Form presents a selection of major works spanning the last three decades of award-winning artist Trevor Bell’s career, including the most recent paintings and favoured works from the artist’s personal archive.

Along with other significant artists who were working in St Ives in the 1950s, Trevor Bell (1930-2017), helped establish British art on the international stage. He also spent 20 years living and working in America and showed work on both sides of the Atlantic.

The History Boys' in ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter, Anslem Kiefer and Georg Baselitz

Dr Christian Weikop examines how three giants of the post-1945 German art scene refigured painting to critically reflect on German history and art history. Dr Weikop, Chancellor’s Fellow in History of Art at the University of Edinburgh, is a specialist in modern and contemporary German art.

His talk accompanies the ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter exhibition at Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery (26 September 2015 – 16 January 2016).

Taking inspiration from Ivan Chermayeff: Cut and Paste, why not come and make your own collages from a variety of found materials.

This event is suitable for all ages.

We are also delighted to be exhibiting work by Stanley Donwood. His Dream Cargo collection of J.G. Ballard book covers will be on display as part of the Plymouth International Book Festival.

Arts Funding Scheme Launched in Plymouth

A new scheme to enable young people to lead their own creative projects has been launched in Plymouth. New Wave is inviting young people in the city to apply for small grants of between £50 and £1500 from today until 28th March 2014.

Why not join us at 1pm for a 30-minute informal talk/tour around our Plymouth Society of Artists exhibition? Admission is free but places are limited. Please collect a ticket from the Welcome Desk or contact us and we will post or put one aside for you. Unreserved tickets may be available on the day so it’s worth checking with us. What’s more, everyone who attends can use their ticket for a 10% discount in our café afterwards!
