Thirty Plympton Brownies recently joined National Trust Wardens Stephen Holley and Bob Mayer to plant sixty trees in the beautiful parkland estate at Saltram House.

The project, which was supported by the Woodland Trust, encouraged community groups to celebrate the Queens Jubilee through the planting of trees. The Brownies were keen to get involved but had nowhere to plant the trees, hence their call to the Trust.

Fortunately the National Trust was only too pleased to help, and on a bright and sunny Saturday morning thirty Brownies from 1st Plympton & 4th Plympton arrived at Saltram with wellies and spades. After a brief introduction the Brownies had a fun trailer ride to the site, where planting instructions were given before the planting began. Within an hour all the trees were planted and thirty slightly muddy Brownies returned to Saltram for celebratory refreshments – including a cake specially made by Barn Owl.

Stephen Holley the National Trust Area Warden said: ‘It was great to be able to work with the local Brownies, identifying a location and selecting the species. As we were in need of some woodland under-planting we were able to select Hazel, Holly, Hawthorn and Rowan; to which we added a couple of Yew and Box. The Brownies and staff really enjoyed the day and hopefully the Brownies will come and re-visit the site to see the trees develop.

1st Plympton assistant, Jane Roberts, first became aware of the scheme last year and because of the community aspect decided to apply. ‘The project seemed a great way to celebrate the Queens Jubilee, provide a long term community benefit and help wildlife. It’s a perfect way to remember a special jubilee year.’

The planting has taken place near the Saltram estate entrance so all visitors to the park will be able to enjoy the Brownies hard work.
