New treasure on display at City Museum and Art Gallery

A piece of Devon Treasure thought to be around 350 years old is now on display at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

The ancient item is a silver seal ‘matrix’ or ‘stamp’. Experts believe it once belonged to the Southcote family of South Devon as it bears the impression of the family coat of arms.

Enjoy a talk by art historian, Cath Wallace which includes all the main characters from 'Summer in February - the Jonathan Smith novel which was made into a film in 2013. Set in Cornwall in the early 20th century, 'Summer in February' focuses on a group of Bohemian artists called the Lamorna Group. The group included Laura Knight and a touring exhibition of her work will be on display here from the National Portrait Gallery, London from 1 March to 10 May 2014.
