Mums-to-be who have previously had a caesarean section and are planning a vaginal birth this time are being invited to a midwife-led workshop to help them prepare for labour and birth.

The ‘Preparation for Birth Following Caesarean Section’ workshops are one-off group sessions, facilitated by midwives experienced in caring for women who choose to have a vaginal birth following a previous caesarean section (VBAC).

Clara Southby, Lead Midwife for Maternal Health Improvement explains: “About one in five women in the UK give birth by caesarean, but for most women, a vaginal birth in a subsequent pregnancy is a safe choice and the chances of having one are very good.

“However, women and their partners often feel nervous about opting for a vaginal birth. This might be because of their previous birth experience or because they haven’t experienced labour before.

“We want our mums-to-be to feel fully supported and informed about their care. The workshops are designed to help mums and their birth partners to feel more prepared for labour and birth. They also provide a great opportunity for patients to talk to other couples who have had similar experiences.”

Workshop dates are planned for the rest of the year and mums who would like to find out more, or wish to book a place on a workshop, can go to www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/birth-following-caesarean-section.
