Celebrations are in order for Plymouth’s Westcountry Hawks Wheelchair Rugby team after they were named as ‘Finalist’ at the National England Rugby Union President’s awards at Twickenham last Sunday.

Hawks beat a huge amount of other clubs from across the UK in their bid to claim the prestigious award.

The award, one of six given at the presentation, was presented for team’s demonstration of rugby as a vehicle of social change, transforming the lives of surrounding communities and creating a successful, vibrant club.

Coach, Chris Perkins and Captain, Adam Simmons were presented with the award by RFU president and former President Jonathon Dance and Bob Reeves.

Chris commented, “Walking onto the pitch at the home of English rugby was an overwhelming experience.”

He added, “I am so proud of Hawks and all the team has achieved. I hope that by winning this award we can inspire more people across the South West to get out and try something new whatever their physical ability.”

David Pond, CEO of Great Britain Wheelchair rugby congratulated the team’s success. “The growth of such excellent clubs around the country has been made possible due to the generous funding from Sport England and the National Lottery and the tireless efforts of enthusiasts such as Chris and Adam. They deserve major recognition for what they have achieved here.”

A terrifying fusion of ice hockey, handball and rugby, Wheelchair Rugby was founded in Canada in 1977 and originally dubbed ‘Murderball’. Eight rolling substitutes make up squads of 12, with four players on court per team at any time. The aim is to cross the opponents’ goal line with two wheels in contact with the hardwood floor and the ball in your hands. Players in possession have to bounce the ball or pass within 10 seconds of receiving it.

If you fancy giving Wheelchair Rugby a go, The West Country Hawks train at the Plymouth Life Centre every Monday night 6pm-7pm.
