Race to it! Beginners invited to join running groups

Don’t get left behind – race to it!

Plymouth City Council’s sports development unit is looking for beginner runners to join its new 5K and 10K training groups – and the first session is free!

Running five kilometres (3.1 miles) is an excellent goal for first timers and a great way to train for the Race for Life or one of the many club races being organised in the city this year. Those who are already running for 30 minutes may find that 10 kilometres is a better challenge for them.

Each training group is designed to develop your running ability and promote a noticeable improvement week on week. With a mixture of activity sessions and road runs, the courses are designed to be challenging, fun and enjoyable.

Leaders will be on hand to motivate and give tips on everything from running style to suitable clothing and footwear.

The running groups are suitable for all abilities and are open to men and women over the age of 16, with the exception of one which has been organised especially for the over-50s. The first session is free and all further sessions will cost just £2 a week.

Just turn up to one of the following group sessions:

5K training for beginners

Monday 4 March
5.30pm: City Business Park, Somerset Place, Stoke

Tuesday 5 March
6pm: Sainsbury’s supermarket, Marsh Mills

Thursday 7 March
6.15pm: Plymouth Life Centre, Central Park

Sunday 10 March
10am UCP Marjon Sports Centre, Derriford Road

5K training for the over-50s

Tuesday 5 March
6.15pm: Park and Ride bus stop, Central Park

10K training for those who can run for 30 minutes

Monday 4 March
6.15pm: Plymouth Life Centre, Central Park

6.30pm: Plymstock School Sports Centre, Church Road, Plymstock

Tuesday 5 March
7pm: Sainsbury’s supermarket, Marsh Mills

Wednesday 6 March
7pm: Lipson Community College Sports Centre, Bernice Terrace, Lipson

Friday 8 March
9.30am: Saltram House car park, Plympton
