Praise for University's international appeal

Plymouth University is among the top choices for international students whose main motivation is to get a good job, new research reveals.

A report by the University Alliance shows 87% of international students studying at Alliance universities, which include Plymouth, are there because they want a good job. This is compared to an average of 83% at UK Universities overall, and in higher education globally.

The report singles Plymouth out for praise, highlighting its enterprise mission and praising the use of competitions and workshops to increase interest in entrepreneurship and help students develop skills and experience beneficial for long term employability.

It also highlights the University’s participation in FLUX competitions, in which over 2,000 Plymouth students and 300 employers have taken part in the past six years, which have seen the University hosting two, and winning three, national finals.

Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, said: “Plymouth University's global impact for world class research and teaching excellence underpins our international student experience. We ensure our graduates are fully prepared to join the global market place, and over 90% of those graduating from a full-time first degree go straight into employment or further study. Our success in national business innovation challenges reflects the rich entrepreneurial culture we have here, and the way we have embedded enterprise right across the curriculum.”

The report, Growing Global Graduates, showcases examples from the 24 Alliance universities which demonstrate why they are so effective at equipping students for long-term employability and why students are choosing to study at them. It will be officially launched at Going Global, the British Council’s annual conference for world education leaders, in Abu Dhabi today.

Libby Hackett, Chief Executive of University Alliance, said: “Graduate careers are under the spotlight like never before. Students want to ensure their degree and time at university will help set them up for a rewarding and fulfilling career in a rapidly changing world. Students recognise the value of higher education in improving their employability and the data suggest that Alliance universities attract students particularly focused on their future careers.”
