Plymouth residents honoured for their actions in emergency situations

“It’s not every day you meet people who put aside all fear in emergency situations to help those in need.”

That was the message from Chief Superintendent Alexandra Doughty at a recent awards ceremony in Plymouth, where four members of the public were honoured for acts of bravery when faced with emergency situations.

Rebecca Ferris, Joanne Raw and two other members of the public received Superintendents Certificates to recognise their actions.

Ch/Supt Doughty said: “It was incredible to hear the stories of true courage and selflessness, putting others before themselves without a second thought.

“It is a reminder of the strength, resilience and compassion that exists across our communities in Plymouth. I am proud to stand alongside such incredible people.”

Rebecca was recognised for carrying out CPR without hesitation after finding a man unresponsive while out rock climbing, going above and beyond in extreme circumstances.

Joanne received an award for helping to save the life of a cyclist who was trapped under a vehicle following a collision by using a car jack to release them.

The other two members of the public were recognised after they helped a person who collapsed in the street, working together to provide lifesaving first aid until emergency services arrived.

During the ceremony, police officers, police staff and colleagues from partner agencies also received awards, recognising their efforts in going above and beyond the line of duty to protect people from harm.

Ch/Supt Doughty added: “I feel privileged to have been able to play a part in recognising so many inspiring people.

“The actions of these officers and staff range from incredibly moving and harrowing accounts of the support provided to the public at times of crisis, to ones of innovation and self-sacrifice.

“Each and every person who received an award showed utter compassion, bravery and selflessness. Thank you for all you do and continue to do to keep communities safe.”
