Plymouth MP Luke Pollard Meets Pupils at Drake Primary Academy
Pupils at Drake Primary Academy, part of theReach South Academy Trust, had the opportunity to quiz their local MP this week as Luke Pollard visited the school.
The Labour MP for Plymouth, Sutton and Devonport, who also serves as Minister for Defence Procurement, spent time chatting with pupils, toured the school, and later joined a whole-school assembly where he explained the role of a member of parliament and how MPs represent their communities.
The visit marked pupils’ second encounter with parliament in just a month, following a recent session with Tomas Williams, the UK Parliament’s Senior Education and Engagement Officer for the South West of England.
Drake Primary Academy places a strong emphasis on encouraging pupils to take an active role in school life and to understand how their views can make a difference. Through its commitment to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, the school actively promotes the values of democracy, fairness and respect for others. Visits like this help pupils build the confidence to ask questions, share their opinions, and see how participation and representation play a role in everyday life.
Jacqueline Stephens, Executive Headteacher at Drake Primary Academy, said:
“We’re very grateful to Luke for taking the time to visit our school and see our learning in action. Our pupils demonstrated a real understanding in their discussions with him, building on what they learned during their recent session with Tomas Williams. Opportunities like this give them a real insight into how democracy works and help their curiosity and confidence grow.”
