Heather Howlett, Personal Activities Leader for Bickleigh Down Care Home is nominated as a finalist for her dedication to making a difference

Heather Howlett, Personal Activities Leader at Four Season Health Care’s Bickleigh Down Care Home in Devon, is a finalist in this year’s National Dementia Awards.

Heather Maxwell, Regional Manager for Four Seasons Health Care, nominated Heather for the award as a result of her combined 13 years’ service to Bickleigh Down Care Home and her continual development of activities to meet the requests of residents.

Heather has been recognised for focusing on residents past life experiences and how these may influence the care they require in their later years. In addition she has ensured that residents living in Bickleigh Down remain connected to their communities, especially the Naval community which forged so much camaraderie during the time when residents served in the Forces. As there are several ex-service personnel at the care home Heather has arranged for new navy recruits to visit the residents and connect with those who once had navy careers too.

Heather also organised an Armed Forces Day which all residents thoroughly enjoyed as many of them are from the Plymouth area, a City steeped in Naval history. This is reflected in the theming of the dementia corridors of the home which Heather helps the staff to maintain so that the residents’ environment remains rich and stimulating.

In addition, Heather helps teach staff just embarking on their caring careers what hard work is like but also how rewarding it can be too. She has inspired many of them to become passionate and enthusiastic in undertaking the privilege of caring for residents.

Heather Maxwell, Regional Manager, said: “Heather is a remarkable person who effortlessly adapts to the needs of each resident. She is known for her caring and supportive nature which puts a smile on not only the resident’s faces but all those who have the pleasure to work with and know her. She listens to and supports residents as well as their relatives, offering reassurance to those who are experiencing hardships. She really has changed the world as perceived by our residents at Bickleigh Down and I wish her the best of luck in this year’s National Dementia Awards.”

The 4th National Dementia Awards will be held on 6th November 2013 at Colwick Hall Hotel, Nottingham. BBC News presenter Bill Turnball will be hosting this year’s awards.
