Plymouth’s Mayflower West car park is being closed as a precautionary measure after structural problems were discovered during survey work by Plymouth City Council.

The survey found more significant deterioration than predicted in some sections.

The car park has nearly 500 spaces and is the oldest major car park in the city, having been built in 1965.

It underwent major strengthening work in 2004 and regular inspections have been taking place to monitor its condition.

Signs are being put up on access roads to the car park directing drivers to alternative sites.

A council statement said: “We are sorry for the disruption and inconvenience this closure will cause, but public safety must be our number one priority.

“Work to establish the extent of the problems will be carried out as quickly as possible and the public will be updated on progress.”

The council hopes to make a further announcement on the future of the Mayflower West car park in December.
