The casting of a symbolic ‘coping stone’ was the centrepiece of a special event today (Thursday 9 May) to mark the progress of the multi-million pound redevelopment of Marine Academy Plymouth.

Around 80 people, including local MPs, council officials, governors and pupils gathered inside the £9.5 million new building at the St Budeaux-based academy, to witness the stone being cast in concrete.

In a twist to the traditional topping out ceremony, the stone is now set to be fixed on the roof by contractors BAM Construction, at the highest point of the building. Traditionally, the ceremony is held to ward off evil spirits and ensure good fortune for the future.

Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, one of the key sponsors of MAP, welcomed guests to the event and reflected upon the progress of the academy since it opened in September 2010.

Professor Purcell said: “Marine Academy Plymouth has made enormous strides since its launch nearly three years ago. Today’s ceremony was both a celebration of MAP’s achievements to date, and a symbol of the exciting developments ahead that will lead to further success for our students and the community.”

The new building will include classrooms, a theatre, a dance studio, music rooms, science laboratories, an ICT suite, a new kitchen and dining area, and a new entrance. Externally there will also be new seating areas and a performance area.

The building is part of a £14 million pound project which will also see the construction of a brand new primary school – MAP 2 – and an astroturf sports pitch. Construction commenced in July of last year, and will be completed in September in time for the new academic year.

Professor Mary Watkins, Chair of the Board of Governors; Helen Mathieson, Principal of MAP; and Steve Tapson, Regional Director of BAM Construction, all spoke at the ceremony.

Helen Mathieson said: "MAP continues to be a story of success, serving its community and ensuring a brighter future for our children."
