Acclaimed luxury lifestyle site Muddy Stilettos asked its readers to vote for the best local village, town or city to call home in 2023 using its Top 250 Best Places to Live guide. In a regional vote across 28 counties, EXMOUTH topped the poll of 10 potential candidates in DEVON.

From towns to villages, hamlets to commuter favourites, each of the initial 250 locations were independently researched and picked by the highly trusted Muddy editorial team and then over 25,000 readers went on to vote.  The results revealed the strength of passion for each town or village’s sense of community, quality of local facilities, and immediate surroundings.

In Devon, Muddy readers voted EXMOUTH to the top spot for its golden sandy beach, 200-berth marina and great road and rail connections to Devon’s capital city. Exmouth has much for outdoorsy types with its long, easy to access beachfront, Jurassic Coast clifftop walks and Exe Estuary Trail, as well as the town’s increasingly swanky seafront hospitality that’s putting it on the map.

The Top 10 most popular towns and villages in DEVON were:

  1. Exmouth
  2. Topsham
  3. Tavistock
  4. Okehampton
  5. Kingsbridge
  6. St Leonard’s, Exeter
  7. Ashburton
  8. Totnes
  9. Sidmouth
  10. Tiverton

Hero Brown, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Muddy Stilettos says, “When people move out of London they are searching for more than just a house, they want to find a new lifestyle that works for them. This exclusive reader vote will give them a fresh perspective to make their search easier. It’s hard to be confident on whether a location is the right place for you, but we’ve built our reputation on having first-hand knowledge on the in-the-know places to go and things to do outside London.  This Reader vote gives a truly independent view on the towns and villages with the most  popular postcodes, schools, restaurants and amenities.

Kate Eales, Head of Regional Agency at Strutt & Parker says “Strutt & Parker’s Housing Futures data found that 57% of those looking to move are happier to travel further to work now than they were before the pandemic, resulting in an emergence of new hotspots across the country as the search for more space or a new lifestyle continues. When it comes to where to live, more than ever people want a really vibrant and tight-knit community. It’s a trend that deepened during the pandemic, and is likely to remain a leading factor for those looking to relocate, alongside the importance of excellent schools, commutability and local hotspots.

"When relocating, researching locations is essential to ensure people find the perfect match for their lifestyle. The Muddy Stilettos Best Places to Live reader vote is a great source of information for those looking to move as it gives top tips on each area from those that know the places best, which provides much needed insight to help inform people’s choices.”

Voting took place between 22nd February – 12th March 2023, and voters got one vote each, decisions were based on their own knowledge of best postcodes, shopping, schools, restaurants and bars, plus the commuting journeys for those needing to travel into London and major conurbations. The directory provided information on all of these factors, but the final decision was readers own personal experience.
