Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service has been shortlisted for two separate awards by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC), recognising its ongoing work to protect residents and businesses against doorstep crime gangs and rogue traders.

The joint service, commissioned by Devon and Somerset County Councils, has been recognised from over 660 entries to this year’s awards, for its innovative partnership work in tackling rogue traders.

Together with the Police, BBC local radio, businesses, Age UK and other agencies, the project team is helping to increase public awareness to protect the elderly and vulnerable from becoming victims.

Using intelligence from partners and the public they have successfully brought significant convictions of offenders as well as providing people with access to reputable alternative businesses.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for the service said: “We are very proud of this innovative approach to tackling rogue doorstep crime. We work with partners and use intelligence to target these criminals who prey mainly on elderly and vulnerable victims.

“We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for these awards, as recognition of the valuable work our service is providing to the public and local businesses.”

Councillor David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Portfolio Holder responsible for the service, said: “Part of the vision of the joint service is to support economic growth and protect consumers and communities by ensuring a safe, fair, responsible, sustainable and competitive trading environment.

“This is truly deserved recognition for the hard work and dedication of our trained officers.

“Marginalising rogue traders, offering  safe and approved alternatives and clamping down on criminals targeting vulnerable people, benefits our local communities and local economy.”

The service’s Doorstep Crime and Rogue Trader initiative is shortlisted in the LGC’s Tackling Fraud, and Public Partnerships categories.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday 12 March 2013 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
