Local homebuilder David Wilson Homes is celebrating a major milestone with the launch of the brand new show home at its Hampton Mill development in Okehampton.

Central Devon MP Mel Stride and the Mayor of West Devon Caroline Mott, joined the homebuilder in officially opening the new show home and toured the development that is quickly taking shape ahead of the first residents arriving in the summer.

89 new homes are to be delivered on a development that is being built with a strong environmental and ecological focus. Along with 3.7 acres of public open space, more than 100 new trees and 11,000 hedgerow saplings are being planted, while each home will be fitted with bee brick habitats and bird or bat boxes. Electric vehicle charging points will come as standard for each home while some will be fitted with UV solar panels to drive renewable.

Once complete, Hampton Mill will make a significant contribution to address the demand for new high-quality homes in Devon. The new development has already seen considerable interest recent weeks. Prices start from £300,000 for a three bedroom home and £475,000 for a four bedroom home.

Since moving on to the site in March 2022, there has been significant investment in the local economy. The project has so far supported the employment of around 275 people, with contributions made via s106 agreements towards local educational facilities.

Mel Stride MP said: "It was great to have a tour of the development this afternoon and to open the new show home. I was particularly pleased to see such a strong focus on ecology within the development, which will help to look after the local environment, including habitats for local wildlife."

West Devon Borough Council’s Mayor, Cllr Caroline Mott, said: “I am delighted to see the launch of this new and exciting development here in Okehampton.”

“These new homes help us address some of the housing issues we face here in West Devon, and it is great to see how this important development is helping our local economy with more employment opportunities.”

Nicki Reid, sales director at David Wilson Homes’ Exeter division, which covers Okehampton, added: “We are thrilled with the level of interest of much-needed new homes here at Hampton Mill. The broad range of new homes, outdoor space and nature conservation have really captured customers’ imagination and they are as excited as we are to see this development taking shape.”

Andrew Spicer, managing director at David Wilson Homes Exeter, said: “It’s been a real pleasure to welcome Mr Stride and Cllr Mott to Hampton Mill to open the new show home and witness first hand the progress that we are making. Every day on our sites across the West Devon area, our experienced, skilled team are hard at work answering the demand for high-quality and energy efficient homes. We are delighted to be supporting the local economy and growing the community. With new houses follows new jobs and we are proud to recruit from and around the communities in which we are building.”

As well as building new homes, David Wilson is providing more than £3.2m in the south west to support people to make the move to their dream home. Buyers can receive support towards a deposit, mortgage payments or moving and running costs on selected properties if they complete before 30 June 2023.

Nicki explained further: “While affordability constraints may hold back some segments of the market, we’re focused on supporting people who need or want to move with straightforward financial help, allowing them to access the great new communities we’re creating across the region. Not only can we provide financial help but in the longer term, moving into a new home can also lead to significant energy cost savings which is an important consideration when rising costs are a concern. Our properties include a range of sustainability features to help reduce bills which could represent savings of up to £3,100 a year.”
