Bespoke Hotels, the UK’s largest independent hotel group, has been appointed to manage the Royal Glen hotel in Sidmouth.

With a history dating back over 300 years, it was circa 1700 that the Royal Glen was built by a Mr King of Bath as a then modest farmhouse, with a dairy, outhouses, a hayloft and a well that still exists at the centre of the house. Later extended and converted into Regency splendour with delightful castellated pediments, tent-roofed verandah and Gothic casements, following various incarnations, including as an orphanage, the property was bought and managed as a Boarding House in 1883 and has been within the current family ownership for almost a hundred years.

On appointing Bespoke to manage the property on their behalf, owner Mrs Hilary Caldwell said ‘ As a custodian of the Royal Glen for the last 40 years and being my home before that; time has never stopped still.  We are excited to move forward with our partnership with Bespoke to ensure it continues to welcome Guests into the’ Glen’ family with its own unique atmosphere and history, taking it into the future in a caring & enthusiastic way for the benefit of visitors and staff alike.’

Today, the Royal Glen is a beautiful 30 bedroomed hotel, perfectly placed for exploring the south Devon coast, and the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The attractive 18th century building features a combination of Regency and Gothic architectural features, with elegant bedrooms, garden, sundeck, verandah and drawing room, while modern requirements are catered for with fine-dining, a bar, indoor swimming pool and well equipped gymnasium.  The hotel boasts impressive sea views from various vantage points, and Sidmouth’s beach is just a few metres away.

Discussing Bespoke’s appointment, Richard Grove, Bespoke Hotels Chief Operating Officer, commented: “We are delighted to welcome the Royal Glen to the Bespoke family. It is a truly outstanding hotel in a wonderful location, and we are confident that it will continue to offer a fabulous welcome for those visiting this beautiful part of the country as well as an important part of the local community .”

Following its annual winter closure, in which time refurbishments to the Bar have been completed, the Royal Glen re-opened its doors on 1st March , once again welcoming both visitors and locals to enjoy its great hospitality.

Alongside many of the Royal Glen’s existing team members when the hotel re-opens, there will be a new face, in the form of Andrew King who joins the hotel as General Manager. (no relation to the original Mr King of Bath !)  Andrew brings with him more than 25 years’ experience in the hotel and hospitality sector. Having held roles in many prestigious London hotels, including The Cadogan Hotel in Knightsbridge, The Dorchester and Cliveden. He has also worked extensively throughout South East Asia and the Middle East, managing hotels in Sri Lanka, Kuala Lumpur and Oman.

As the general manager at the Sharrow Bay Hotel, Cumbria for eight years, he successfully maintained its two AA Rosettes and three AA Red Star status.

He relocated to Devon in 2015 and was most recently managing Paschoe house hotel, a twelve bedroomed boutique property close to Crediton before joining the Royal Glen earlier this year.

Speaking of his new role – Mr King said ‘I am delighted to be joining the team at the Royal Glen hotel at this very exciting time.  I look forward to building on its already excellent reputation for food and customer service, both within Sidmouth and the South West’

To celebrate the hotel re-opening – we are offering an exciting 4 night offer, with Dinner, Bed & Breakfast for two people from just £159 per night throughout March ( excluding Saturdays )
