Delve into Dartmoor’s wonderful wildlife this February half term with a focus on the moor’s birds.

Dartmoor is home to a fascinating range of birds and provides a refuge for species that are under threat elsewhere. Birds such as the cuckoo, meadow pipit, skylark and ring ouzel can all be seen and heard at different times of the year.

The Authority is committed to keeping the landscape special while helping people to care and look after it for years to come.

February half-term offers the perfect opportunity for people to enjoy Dartmoor with a range of free family activities at the National Park Visitor Centres.

Explore a cuckoo trail, go on a bird search adventure around Haytor, get crafty and make your own feathered friend, plus much more. Throughout the week, the RSPB will help people learn more about our birds.

Details of all events are listed on the website.

The week-long programme comes after the visitor centres were named finalists in the 2021/22 Devon Tourism Awards. They’re among 65 shortlisted finalists marked out for their excellence, creativity and innovation with an awards day on March 10.

Rebecca Martin, Dartmoor National Park Authority’s Visitor Services Manager, said: “We’re so happy to be named a finalist in the Visitor Information Service of the Year category. Our friendly staff are always willing to help people make the best of their Dartmoor day out, so this is testament to their positive attitudes and enthusiasm.

“Nature is the ultimate playground and half term is a great time for families to join us for some adventures. Children can have fun making a robin or identifying birds and birdwatchers of all ages can see what they spot from our hides.

“If people prefer to do their own thing, they can pick up maps and go off in search of the early sights and sounds of spring. People can also buy local products, gifts, maps, books or guides from our excellent retail range.”

Time for Nature Challenge

The National Park has extended its special Time for Nature Challenge launched in 2021 to mark the 70th anniversary of Dartmoor’s designation as a National Park.

This challenge is about making time for wildlife; enjoying the moments that lift the spirits, discovering new things about nature and making small but important changes that protect it for future generations.

Points are given for each activity completed. Anyone scoring 70 or more are in with a chance of winning a goodie bag packed with Dartmoor products. Some half term activities count towards the challenge, offering the perfect opportunity to get involved. Find out more about taking part
