Iconic Ivybridge mill acquired by heritage property specialists

After 200 years of active service as a paper mill, the iconic Stowford Mill site in Ivybridge has been acquired by Burrington Estates and joint venture partner Pillar Land Securities as part of a £20 million regeneration project. Burrington Estates’ vision is to transform this eight-acre site, which sits in a beautiful location in the Erme Valley and is framed by Dartmoor National Park and Brunel’s Great Western Railway, into a beautiful, eclectic, mixed-use development.

Headed up by Burrington Estates, which specialises in sympathetically restoring historic buildings in the South West, the experienced development team aims to carry out the sensitive renovation of this special site taking into careful consideration the opinions of all local stakeholders to ensure the design offers the most appropriate scheme for the benefit of the wider community.

Councillor Michael Saltern comments: "I am impressed by the recognition of the importance of this site as part of our heritage and a key to our future. The willingness of the joint venture partners to embrace the Ivybridge Community views shows very positive intent”.

Burrington’s vision is for a design-led scheme that provides a mix of high-quality housing for all budgets, restaurant, retail and leisure opportunities, as well as formal and informal public spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone. Stowford Mill will once again become an important contributor to the town's economy with a key focus on the creation of employment opportunities and feeding back into the local economy.

A public consultation will soon commence, which is to include an exhibition to be hosted at Stowford Mill, where local residents will be invited to discover more about Burrington Estates’ plans and provide feedback.

Mark Edworthy, Managing Director of Burrington Estates, said: “We are very excited about working on the Stowford Mill development project, which we hope will be embraced by the local community. We are fully committed to investing the necessary time, money and expertise into ensuring we are able to preserve, and if possible enhance, the heritage of the site as well as providing an eclectic mixed use development.”

Richard Pillar of Pillar Land Securities said: “I am delighted to be part of the vision and delivery team and have enjoyed working with all local stakeholders in building our scheme ideas to date.”
Mark Edworthy continued: “Stowford Mill has been a fixture of the landscape and the local community for more than two centuries, and intrinsic to the town’s economic growth. We are delighted to be working closely with the local authority to ensure the Mill continues to play an important role in the future of Ivybridge.”

A website is currently being developed and its aim, along with a Stowford Mill Facebook page, will be to both inform and engage with members of the community – www.stowfordmill.com.
