It's getting just a little bit close to the C-word, and as the Guild's annual Christmas crafts show opens next Friday, staff are already delighting in the handmade exhibits flooding in for display in their gallery.

MAKE is the popular annual selling exhibition which heralds winter and the festive season. Bovey's gallery will showcase the best contemporary craftwork from over 50 UK-based designer-makers. If shoppers want to avoid the busy - and sometimes bland and manufactured fare on the high street, they can visit MAKE (open every week-end and up til Christmas Eve) to browse and buy something a little different.

You can view distinctive, handmade creations such as Syrah Jay's bright felted jewellery and Bee Hayes' volcanic-fired ceramic tableware. Choose from the latest handprinted designs in textiles (Grace & Favour; The Pocket Pirate) to functional items for the home in glassware and wood (Helen Tiffany; Tim Evershed; Rosie Brewer).

Prices suit all - ranging from £4.50 - so it’s an ideal opportunity to buy someone a personal and sure to be treasured gift for Christmas. Following the launch (6pm) on 17 November, the Guild’s Celebration Day on Saturday 2nd December combines traditional festivities, music and storytelling with the contemporary designer craftwork on display. There's also a Scandinavian Craft Cafe on 8th December (book 01626 831959) for an evening of decorative crafting with themed menu.
