New family events at Smeaton’s Tower

Plymouth City Council's arts and heritage service has launched a brand new series of family-friendly events at Smeaton’s Tower.

‘Smeaton’s Tower Rocks’ will take place on Sunday 12 June, with a chance to paint lighthouse scenes on pebbles collected from the local foreshore.

Visitors will be able to paint ‘Sunny Seaside Scenes’ on Sunday 17 July and make ‘Super Seabird Puppets’ on Sunday 21 August.

They can then make ‘Big and Mini Lighthouse’ sculptures on Sunday 11 September tto mark Heritage Open Days 2016.

On Sunday 16 October – the date the first light was lit in Smeaton’s Tower in 1759 – visitors will be able to make some lovely ‘Fish, Ships and Lighthouse’ bunting featuring the tower, boats and candles that would have burnt bright out on the Eddystone Reef.

Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “We’re officially claiming Sundays as ‘Smeaton’s Days’! These events will take place come rain or shine and will give families a chance to get creative in and around one of the city’s most historic buildings. I hope everyone will make the most of this opportunity to celebrate our wonderful lighthouse over the next few months.”

All activities will take place from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4pm and people can drop in for as little or as long as they like. There is no need to book in advance.

Admission fees are just £3 for adults and £1.50 for children aged five to 16. Under-fives go free and a family ticket for up to two adults and three children is also available for £8.50.
