Plympton Academy students have won the fiercely contested Devon Secondary Schools Battle of the Bands competition, organised by the Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs.

Following their impressive performance in the regional heats earlier this month, the academy's band, 'The Zombies,' clinched the top spot, earning them a spot in the final showdown at Bomba in Exeter on Thursday 27th June.

Judged by music industry professionals from R&K Systems and the Music in Devon Initiative (MIDI), the competition highlighted the talents of secondary school bands across Devon.

'The Zombies' wowed judges with their electrifying performance of 'Zombie Apocalypse,' not only securing the title but also earning the chance to professionally record their music and grace the stages of esteemed festivals.

The band from Plympton Academy, a proud member of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, boasts a diverse lineup of students, including a Year 9 bass player, a Year 11 vocalist, a Year 11 guitarist, and two Year 13 guitarists, alongside a Year 13 drummer.

Most of these students have either completed or are currently enrolled in Level 2 Music Practice courses at the Academy, with three members are finalising their Level 3 Music Performance and Music Technology courses.

The band rehearses after school, with the Year 13 band members also helping younger students in training bands for Years 7 to 9 during tutor time. This initiative gives younger students the chance to work with more experienced and confident peers.

The band members are self-motivated, selecting their own performance pieces with minimal guidance for teachers at the Academy, reflecting their experience and skill. The band has been together for two years, enhancing their abilities and creating an unstoppable ensemble.

Nicky Clapson, Head of Music at Plympton Academy, expressed immense pride in the band's achievement, commenting:

"Our students' hard work and dedication have truly paid off. Through their perseverance and collaboration, they have earned this remarkable opportunity to shine on a bigger stage.

“These experiences play a crucial role in developing their musical skills and establishing a solid foundation for their future in the music industry, while also nurturing a profound enthusiasm for performing and collaborating.

“It is a great privilege for us to witness their talent being acknowledged by industry professionals. It is not just about the victory; it is about the journey of growth and learning they have undertaken.”

Jamie, a Year 13 student and band member, shared his excitement:

"It was a great experience. We enjoyed the opportunity to perform and meet new people and receive feedback from distinguished musicians.

“We can’t wait to see what the future holds as a band and get professional performances booked."
