In Devon, approximately 135,000 people look after someone who couldn’t manage without their help and receive no payment for it. Some are new to caring, while others have cared for a family member, friend or neighbour for some time. It’s an invaluable role but carers often feel alone or unsupported, particularly in light of the current cost-of-living crisis.

Devon Carers, part of Westbank Community Health and Care, is hosting a free Information and Advice Fair specifically for unpaid carers on Carers Rights Day. The event will take place on Thursday 24th November at the Exeter Corn Exchange in Market Street from 10 am to 4 pm. Anyone looking for information or advice about caring or their rights as a carer is welcome to pop along for a chat over refreshments.

It’s a useful one-stop-shop for carers to find out about the help and advice on offer from Devon Carers and other organisations. These include Citizens Advice Exeter, COSY Routes Exeter, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, Devon Young Carers, Exeter Dementia Action Alliance, the Independent Living Centre, South West Autism, Talkworks, Time For You and Westbank Community Health and Care.

The event will also hold a pop-up vaccine hub from 11 am – 2 pm for any carers who need their COVID booster. There is no need to book, however, there will be limited vaccine supplies.

Carers Rights Day is a national, annual event to ensure carers are aware of their rights and know where to get help and support. It also raises awareness of the needs of carers.
