Government announces new 'cost of driving' measures

The Government has announced measures to help motorists to cut the cost of running a car. These include a crackdown on whiplash fraud, a freeze on MOT test prices and a scheme designed to reduce the cost of fuel at motorway service stations, Justice Secretary Chris Grayling announced today.

South West drivers urged to prepare as national spring breakdowns rise 25% since 2022

National Highways is reminding drivers in the South West to carry out simple vehicle checks before travelling, as new figures show spring breakdowns on England’s motorways and major A-roads are 25.6% higher than in 2022.

A total of 71,254 breakdowns were recorded in spring 2025 (March–May), compared with 56,702 in 2022.

New speed cameras coming to North Devon

Following a successful bid for funding, Devon County Council and Devon & Cornwall Police are installing new cameras in North Devon in response to community concerns about speeding.

The two new speed cameras are due to be installed this April on the A361 in Knowle village and on the approach to Ilfracombe town centre.

Both roads have a speed limit of 30mph.

In 1773 artist William Hodges left Plymouth with Captain James Cook and became the first artist to visit Antarctica. He set a tradition of topographical, landscape painting that continued throughout the 20th century.
