The nation’s seventh national Get Online Week begins today (Monday 14 October) and this year people are being encouraged to get digital for the week.

Whether you want to get healthy, get connected or get a bargain, doing it the digital way by getting online could make everything quicker and easier. But there are still 7.2 million people in the UK who are offline, and a further 8.5 million who don’t have the skills to make the most of online life.

Get Online Week challenges Brits to try getting digital, and see what they could be doing online.

Thousands of Get Online Week events are set to take place across the length and breadth of the country, where anyone can pop in to find out more about computers and the internet.

Last year more than 50,000 people got online for Get Online Week, and this year it’s hoped even more people will use it as their opportunity to get digital. People will be able to find an event near them by calling free on 0800 77 1234 or by searching on behalf of a friend or family member at www.getonlineweek.com.

Plymouth City Council are offering a number of free sessions across the city's libraries which include:

  • 'IT for job searching
  • ''The Savvy Consumer Online - Online shopping and safety'
  • 'Family History online'
  • 'Get started with Twitter'
  • 'Inspect a Gadget'

The Get Online Week campaign is run by Tinder Foundation the organisation behind the national network of UK online centres.

Chief Executive Helen Milner explains:  “We’re really excited about Get Online Week because it’s the biggest digital inclusion campaign of the year and this year is set to be even bigger and better than ever!

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even even touched a computer before or if you already know the basics the internet can still open up whole new worlds and help you do more of the stuff you like doing best. What’s more, it could help you save time and money  leaving you to concentrate on the really important things in life.

"From keeping in touch with friends and family to searching out a bargain buy, staying fit and healthy to gaining skills for work, this Get Online Week we’re on hand to help you help yourself to anything and everything technology has to offer. Come along and pay us a visit!”
