Funeral homes in Devon are providing a lifeline to bereaved families as Father’s Day approaches.

After research* found that 58% of those who have experienced bereavement find calendar events such as Father’s Day difficult, Co-op Funeralcare branches across Devon are inviting local people to join their bereavement support groups.

The groups offer support to those navigating the emotional challenges that significant dates can bring. The drop-in sessions are intended to be a safe space where people can share their experiences, take comfort in a supportive environment, or simply listen over a cup of tea or coffee.

  • Teignmouth: Last Friday of the month, from 11am-1pm, at Co-op Funeralcare Teignmouth
  • Torquay: Last Friday of the month, from 11am-1pm, at Co-op Funeralcare Torquay

The groups are built on two simple principles: confidentiality and respect. Through peer support and shared experiences, they provide an essential service to those in the local community and are open to anyone who is grieving and looking for a supportive space to connect with others who have experienced loss.

Reflecting on the impact the groups have had on the community, Michael Burdett, Funeral Director at Co-op Funeralcare Teignmouth, said: “Grief can feel isolating and loneliness can affect people at any stage of life. For those who have experienced bereavement, occasions like Father’s Day can bring memories to the surface and make the absence of a loved one feel even more profound.

“Bereavement groups can be a vital outlet for open conversation, connection and emotional support. Through this support group, we want to remind people that they’re not alone.

“Our role in the community goes far beyond arranging funerals. Support doesn’t stop once a service has taken place and we feel honoured to continue being there for families as they navigate their grief.

“We encourage anyone in Devon experiencing grief to pop in and get in touch. We're here for you.”
