Cosy community cinemas pop-up in Devon and Torbay libraries
Libraries Unlimited is bringing back its popular Films at the Library programme, transforming libraries across Devon and Torbay into cosy community cinemas from29th October.
The new season of low-cost screenings promises something for everyone. From a heartwarming drama inspired by a true story, Mr Burton, to setting sail on an animated animal adventure with Flow. Whether you're looking for an affordable outing with friends and family or a solo escape into a new story, libraries provide a welcoming space to enjoy film together.
Libraries Unlimited, the charity commissioned to run the libraries in Devon and Torbay, runs Films at the Library twice a year, in the autumn and the spring. It is funded by Arts Council England, allowing libraries to make the screenings low cost. Tickets are just £3 for library members and £5 for non-members*. It’s free and easy to join the library, either by popping in oronline.
All screenings will be accessible with captions and tickets include free popcorn and blankets. Libraries Unlimited is encouraging people to come alone if they want.
“Going to the cinema alone has been proven to have health benefits including relieving stress, with the darkened cinema having a calming effect on your nervous system.” Said Rae Hoole, Creative Communities Producer at Libraries Unlimited. “It’s also of course a form of escapism, allowing people to switch off from their everyday lives for an hour or two. Also, libraries are wonderful welcoming spaces, so you can be completely comfortable coming alone, and you might even meet some new people! We want people to turn up, get cosy and switch off.”
The eight libraries taking part are Cullompton, Newton Abbot, St Thomas, Seaton, Exmouth, Brixham, Barnstaple and Northam – offering a geographical spread across the county.
