Cancer is daunting, not just for patients, but for the clinical teams who care for them. That’s why Consultant Clinical Oncologists Dr John McGrane and Dr Michael Rowe have launched Simply Oncology, a new podcast designed to breakdown the complexities of cancer care into clear, compassionate, and accessible conversations for patients and anyone interested in the field of oncology.

Following the launch in April 2024, there are now nearly 70 episodes already available, each lasting around 20 to 30 minutes.

Simply Oncology dives deep into the world of cancer research, patient experiences, and the latest breakthroughs in oncology.

The podcast features a mix of patient-focused episodes and guest-expert discussions, making it a valuable resource for anyone affected by cancer, whether you're a patient, a loved one, or a healthcare professional.

The ‘Fundamentals’ episodes are patient focused and centre around core cancer care topics. The ‘In the Clinic’ episodes are aimed more at health professionals and anyone with an interest in cancer care.

Dr McGrane, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) since 2014, is also the clinical lead for radiotherapy and co-founder of the award-winning MySunrise cancer support app. His co-host, Dr Rowe, completed his specialty training in 2024 and specialises in urological, upper gastrointestinal, and hepatobiliary cancers.

Together, they bring a wealth of clinical expertise and a shared passion for improving patient communication. Their goal is to make cancer care more understandable, more human, and more supportive.

Listeners have praised Simply Oncology for its clarity, empathy, and educational value. The podcast is frequently described as informative, inspiring, and an invaluable resource. Episodes explore a wide range of topics, from chemotherapy and radiotherapy to digital health, the role of clinical nurse specialists, and how oncology letters can better communicate with patients.

The podcast is supported by the MySunrise app, which aims to empower patients with digital tools and trusted information throughout their cancer journey. By integrating Simply Oncology into the cancer pathway, patients gain an additional layer of support, one that is tailored, accessible, and deeply human.

“We have been delighted with the positive feedback about the podcast. We hope that we are delivering topics in a way that is engaging and accessible.” John McGrane and Michael Rowe said.

“We have now had over 1 year of episodes. We have loved the amazing conversations with meaning that our superb guests have brought to the Simply Oncology podcast”
