Plymouth Argyle look set to go one step further next season
Now that the dust has settled on the disappointment of missing out on the League One playoffs by just three points, Argyle fans quickly turn their attention to next season and ask whether or not their team can go just a little bit further and gain promotion to the second tier. Getting out of one of the most competitive leagues in football today won't be easy but Plymouth have all the foundations in place to give it a good go.
The role of Steven Schumacher in success
Fans will be pleased with the performance of manager Steven Schumacher, who stepped up from assistant to replace former boss Ryan Lowe in December, who left to take over at Preston North End. He continued the good work done previously, overseeing a Playoff push and taking European champions Chelsea to extra time in the FA Cup.
Schumacher even received the EFL League One Manager of the Month award for March for his efforts. The 38-year-old may be young and inexperienced but so far he seems to be galvanising the players in all the right ways, and with a whole summer ahead of him to plan, who's to say he can't take Argyle all the way next season?
A need for summer reinforcements
With League One getting more and more competitive every year, much of Plymouth's success in the next campaign will depend on the upcoming summer transfer window. They'll hope to keep the players who have done well this season, potentially move on some fringe players and most importantly, add quality and depth to the squad, to go again.
With the likes of Derby County, Barnsley and Peterborough coming down, and huge clubs like Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth still around, it won't be easy for Plymouth to break into the playoffs or automatic promotion places. It's certainly possible for them to mix it with these types of clubs, but some reinforcements from the transfer market won't go a miss.
Keep developing young players
Schumacher and his coaching staff are very much dedicated to improving young players and working with the youth academy at Argyle. That is why fans have been treated to the likes of Mike Cooper, Luke Jephcott, Adam Randell and Ryan Law coming through the youth system.
Players like these will be vital for the coming years at the club. They can bring quality to the group and help push their beloved Argyle up the table, or if sold they can inject vital funds into the club which in turn can be invested in improving the playing squad and the facilities.
The importance of youth in the next few seasons at Plymouth cannot be overstated.
It hurts right now but it's looking good
Although missing out on the League One playoffs will be tough for many fans to take, especially after coming so close, the signs are there that the club can come back twice as strong next season. If they bring in some players in the summer, continue to build that positive relationship with the young prospects and Schumacher continues to work his magic, we might just be seeing Plymouth Argyle in a Wembley final or celebrating automatic promotion this time next year.
