Volunteers of Salisbury Road Baptist Church have donated £1,000 to Torrington Intensive Care Unit for a second time.

In 2014, Elaine Giles underwent heart surgery and had to stay in Derriford Hospital for nine days. During this time, she stayed on Torrington Intensive Care Unit and has since made a full recovery.

Elaine said: “This charity is very close to my heart. Amazing work is done here and we are very happy to be able to support in any way we can.

“Similar to last time, myself and the other volunteers at the church, including Joan Goodman, Doreen Nation and Michael Giles, raised the money by holding a coffee and cake morning at our church’s café, ‘Wayside Café’. I would like to thank everyone that came along on the day for their support and generosity.

“I received excellent care whilst at Derriford Hospital and this gift is just a small token of my appreciation. We hope to continue raising funds for the unit in the future.”

The cheque was presented to Sylvia Villaquiran, Ward Manager for Torrington Intensive Care Unit. She said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Elaine and all of the other volunteers at Salisbury Road Baptist Church for raising funds for a second time.

“We plan to put the money towards televisions for our patients, which really will make such a huge difference to their stay. Sometimes patients have to stay with us for a long time, so this will help orientate them back into day and night routine.”
