Match Day Preview: Chesterfield v Plymouth Argyle

Chesterfield v Plymouth Argyle

League Two, Tuesday 16th April 2013, 7.45pm

A trip to the Derbyshire town with the crooked spire this evening may be a return to his previous club for Pilgrim's boss John Sheridan, but much more importantly, the fixture represents another crucial test in Plymouth's fight to remain in League Two.

Sheridan was sacked by Chesterfield in August but his arrival at Argyle has brought with it an upturn in form and every hope of avoiding a relegation drop that looked distinctly likely a couple of months ago.

Plymouth must bounce back from the disappointment of Saturday's last minute defeat to another north midlands club, Burton Albion.

Defender, Guy Branston told the club's website: "“It’s still very much in our hands, which is the best way to be, I think.

“I think one win, depending on other results, should seal it. If it’s the end of the season, it’s the end of the season, at Rochdale."

Chesterfield - now managed by Paul Cook - with an outside chance of reaching the promotion play-offs, will also be after three points. They lie behind Exeter in 9th place, four points from the play-off zone but with a game in hand over the Grecians who also now lie outside the play-off places. A recent run of excellent form has provided Chesterfield with a little hope of stealing one of the places in the four-way battle for the final promotion spot.

Plymouth meanwhile will be delighted to finish the season safe from the drop from the Football League. Tonight's match could provide a big step towards achieving that with just two further games remaining - at home to Rotherham and away at Rochdale.
