Last gasp defeat leaves admirable Argyle deflated

Burton Albion 1 Plymouth Argyle 0

League Two, Saturday 13th April 2013

Football can be a cruel game. For 90 minutes Argyle had performed admirably, soaking up pressure in the first half from a Burton side chasing promotion and providing plenty of attacking verve themselves in the second.

But they were defeated by a late late goal to leave Staffordshire with no points for their committed efforts.

The last 15 minutes saw Plymouth create some real pressure and set pieces for both sides might have swung it either way. But it was Burton who stole the points as substitute Matt Patterson poked home from a 90th minute corner. A crushing blow for Pilgrims fans.

The damage could have been worse as Plymouth as other games conspired to leave them 3 points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand as they had been before kick-off. However two of the sides below them, Torquay and Barnet, now share that game in hand after their match was postponed due to weather conditions.

Three games remain, two of them away. John Sheridan will want his side to move on quickly from this disappointment. They travel to Chesterfield - who retain hopes of sneaking a play-off place - on Tuesday night.
