Day two at Wimbledon: Enter the top seeds
Wimbledon got off to a fascinating and uninterrupted start yesterday with Andy Murray progressing safely into the second round, beating Germany's Benjamin Becker. But former champion Rafael Nadal was knocked out in startling fashion by a man ranked 135th in the world.
Nadal, fresh from his victory in the French Open earlier this month, lost in straight sets to the Belgian Steve Darcis, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4. This follows the Spandiard's shock defeat in the second round of Wimbledon last year. Despite suffering injury problems over the last 12 months, Nadal's defeat was the tournament's first major shock.
Andy Murray won his tie in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, while Roger Federer breezed through his first round contest in a little over an hour, beating the Romanian Hanescu 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.
Murray's fellow Brits, Kyle Edmund, James Ward, Elena Baltacha, Johanna Konta, Samantha Murray and Anne Keothavong, all lost.
In the women's draw, number two seed Victoria Azarenka and number three seed Maria Sharapova were both untroubled in straight sets wins.
Day Two
Day two brings the first appearance of both men's and women's top seeds. Serena Williams is first up on Centre Court against Mandy Minella from Luxembourg, followed by Novak Djokovic who plays the German Florian Mayer.
British number one Laura Robson will fly the home flag on No. 1 Court but faces a tough first round draw against Russia's Maria Kirilenko, the number ten seed. British number two Heather Watson faces Madison Keys of the USA on No. 2 Court.
