Wildlife festival returns to Meldon
The Meldon Wildlife Festival is back this year at Meldon Old Quarry, offering an exciting, family-friendly day out on Tuesday 19 August 2025. Organized by Dartmoor National Park Authority in partnership with various wildlife and conservation groups, the event celebrates the beauty of Dartmoor’s nature while raising awareness about peatland conservation.
This year’s theme, ‘Bogtastic Dartmoor’, highlights the importance of upland bogs and valley mires, ecosystems that are crucial to Dartmoor’s unique wildlife. The festival will feature a wide array of activities, such as stream dipping, a minibeast hunt, and a water-themed obstacle course – perfect for keeping young explorers entertained. Children can also enjoy wildlife crafting and learn about rare species like water-wading snipes and the carnivorous sundew plant.
A special collaboration with Peat-Fest South West will bring the region’s rich peatland heritage to life, focusing on youth-centered events and interactive storytelling. Visitors will be able to learn about Dartmoor’s bogs, their role in the ecosystem, and how they support rare plants and animals.
Andy Bailey, Outreach and Engagement Officer at Dartmoor National Park, said: “We’re thrilled to offer a fun and educational experience for families. The festival highlights the critical importance of Dartmoor’s peatlands, not just for wildlife but also for climate change mitigation.”
The Meldon Wildlife Festival runs from 10:30am to 4pm, with free entry, parking, and facilities. Refreshments will be available, including ice cream from Taw River Dairy and food from 1st Okehampton Scouts. The event is made possible thanks to the support of local landowners and partners.
