With Valentine’s Day approaching fast, men all around the country are starting to rummage around the back of the sofa or dust off their credit cards, and preparing to purchase a beautiful bouquet of flowers for the woman (or man!) of their dreams.

But where you live in the country can really make a difference, in terms of what size of bouquet you get, and how much your loved one spends on you.

Top online florist ArenaFlowers.com analysed over one million bouquet orders that it has delivered in Great Britain and found out who are the biggest spenders when it comes to floral deliveries.

The South West came out as the third lowest average spenders on bouquets for their other halves. They spend an average of £33.40 compared to the romantic Scots, where the average spend is plenty more at £41.54 per bouquet.

Looking at the data by town and city shows that if you’re lucky enough to live in Plymouth the average spent on flowers here is a more impressive £42.18. That’ll ensure everything comes up, er, roses on the big day. However, if you happen to live in Taunton, don’t get your hopes up; the average spent on flowers is far less at just £24.93. It’s just not blooming fair…

And what of the recipients of these carefully selected bouquets? Who are these mystery women (or men)? In the UK the top name inscribed on the card that comes with the flowers is ‘Sarah’, while the second most popular name is ‘Susan’. ‘Sarah’ is the most popular name in the South West (although in Plymouth it is Karen). In some cities outside of the South West, the males are being treated to a floral show of love; ‘Paul’ is popular in Aberdeen, while there are a few lucky ‘Davids’ in Bath. Obviously the ladies like to treat their men to a floral delivery in these two fair cities.

ArenaFlowers.com also found that when it comes to flower type, roses are still very popular; the most popular kind of bouquet is a mix of roses and lilies. In the South West, Rose & Freesias are by far the most popular bouquet of choice (as it is in Plymouth). But outside of the South West there are some mavericks out there who like to dare to be different; for example, those in Northampton favour the Fire and Ice bouquet and those in Rutland and Shrewsbury prefer to send a longer lasting gift such as an indoor luxury basket.

Let’s just hope none of them suffer from hayfever…
