Teams wanted for dragon boat race
St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth are looking for local companies and organisations to pull together teams to compete in their first Dragon Boat Race on Sunday 15 June 2014.
Teams of 10-16 people will race replica Chinese war canoes over a short course at the Mount Batten Activity Centre, Plymouth to raise money for the local charity.
Dragon Boat racing is Britain’s fastest growing corporate activity, perfect for team building and a fun way to support St Luke’s. Past competitors in Dragon Boat Race events have included HSBC, Centrica and Asda, even Prince William and Kate Middleton have given it a go! Dragon Boat racing is suitable for all levels of fitness and a qualified helmsman will be provided, so no experience is necessary.
On the day of the event, each team will be allocated three timed races, with a leader board updated throughout the day to keep up the competitive spirit. There will be the opportunity to qualify for the Grand Final, which will be followed by an awards ceremony at the end of the day.
Supporters left on the banks can cheer on the boats as they enjoy a whole host of entertainment including a BBQ, DJ, bands and face painting.
Dragon Boat Events will be running the event on behalf of St Luke’s and can’t wait to bring the boating event to Plymouth as Managing Director Roger Irwin explains: “There really is no better way to raise money for charity than to have a day with your family at the waterside having fun. No experience is required and the events are vibrant spectacles attracting large crowds of spectators. Dragon Boat Events, the originator of the community and charity based events in the UK, works to produce a near faithful copy of the original Hong Kong formula and stages events which are colourful, noisy and great entertainment for the whole family. It is an environmentally friendly activity and a great way to get fit. The expectation is that Dragon Boat racing will continue to play a major role in sports based funding”.
