Splashathon makes waves for charity
Hundreds of children aged 0–5 across Devon and Dorset have taken part in Water Babies’ Splashathon events over recent weeks, raising over £35,000 for Children’s Alliance and the baby loss charity Tommy’s.
The themed swimming sessions saw little ones dressed in costumes as they showed off their water safety skills in locations including Exeter, Bournemouth and Taunton.
Their efforts made a major contribution to the national Splashathon fundraising total, which has already reached £764,785. Local mum Debbie Salway, whose daughter Addison took part in the event, said both charities hold personal meaning for her family.
“Addison herself was born slightly premature after going into labour at 34 weeks. Addison’s older brother, who unfortunately passed, would have really benefited from the Children’s Alliance with the limitations he would have had.
We felt honoured to be able to 'swim' this journey.” Debbie praised the Water Babies programme, saying the lessons were thoughtfully adapted to each child’s capabilities and vital for developing water safety.
“Addison had a one-in-a-million experience with her teacher Emily—full of laughter, fun, and learning how to put her safety skills into action.” The community support was also a highlight, with Addison receiving donations, cards and letters from neighbours, which added to the excitement and purpose of the event.
Water Babies teacher Immy Caddy said seeing children in costume brought added joy to the pool. “Sometimes it helps a little one in a wobble to focus on something silly—like a pirate hat that won’t stay on,” she said.
“I always come away smiling.” Since launching in 2006, Splashathon has raised over £7 million. This year’s total could fund eight months of research at a Tommy’s centre and support Children’s Alliance in delivering programmes that improve access to safe, developmental water experiences for all children.
