Revitalised fountain to light up city centre

A touch of sparkling water will be adding a sense of colour and occasion to the city centre with the San Sebastian fountain being switched on.

LED lights have been installed as well a new pump and the fountain refurbished so that the 21 fountains that make up the display can come to life.

The fountain, which is on the other side of the road from the Civic Centre, was built in 1990 to commemorate the link between Plymouth and the Spanish port.

Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Brian Vincent said: "We thought it was important that this feature came to life again.

"As we are bidding to be City of Culture, we wanted to make a bit of a splash and to help make our lovely city centre more attractive – particularly in the evening, when more people will be out and about as the summer comes along."

Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet Member for Finance added: "There would be no point in having fountains in place not working with stagnant water. What message does that send out? As the summer season approaches we need to make sure our city centre looks good."

It will be switched on during the afternoon and into the early evening and the lighting used on special evening occasions.
