National housebuilder Redrow is proud to announce its recent sponsorship of community owned bookshop, The Bookery.

The Bookery is an Exeter based, community owned bookshop run by a passionate team dedicated to changing lives through the power of books. The bookshop hosts a range of events and actively pioneers programmes that support literacy, community well-being and access to cultural and learning opportunities.

The Bookery run a school’s outreach programme to assure children are provided with books as they have found that only a third of children will ever have money to buy books and many children have no books at home. Child reading has declined during the pandemic and yet evidence has shown that owning books is crucial to literacy and to instilling a love of reading.

To improve child readership, The Bookery partnered with Redrow to sponsor a book for each child in local schools. Author Sarah McIntyre visited Broadclyst Community Primary School (BCPS) to introduce her books ‘Grumpycorn’ and ‘Don’t Call Me Grumpycorn’. Redrow’s sponsorship ensured that each child at BCPS was presented with a copy of ‘Grumpycorn’ signed by the author.

When asked about the recent sponsorship, The Bookery schools co-ordinator Cathie Holden said: “Nothing could be more important to a child’s future than giving the gift of reading.

“The value of Redrow’s sponsorship could be seen in the sheer delight on the faces of the Broadclyst children as they received their gifted book. They had met the author, listened to her talk about the book and the characters in it, and then they received their very own copy to take home”

Area sales manager Kevin Bradford said “Having witnessed the impact the pandemic has had on schools nationwide, Redrow is committed to support child learning and development as the education system recovers. The Bookery’s school outreach programme was the perfect opportunity to for us to contribute back to the education industry.

“As a not-for-profit independent bookshop, The Bookery has showcased its commitment to supporting inclusivity within schools offering equal reading opportunities to children in the region.

“We are so proud to witness the impact our sponsorship has had within Broadclyst Community Primary School and we hope this opportunity encourages further reading and learning.”

Redrow’s Saxon Brook development is located nearby Broadclyst Community Primary School situated to the North East of historic Exeter in the village of Pinhoe.
