Devon residents can now buy a range of low cost, safety-checked, TVs and other electrical products from a number of the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)

The scheme is being run by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd, who operate the HWRCs for Devon County Council. A range of electrical products is now on offer, including vacuum cleaners, lamps and Flat screen TVs.

The goods are being sold within the re-sale shops of five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

They are Pinbrook Recycling Centre in Exeter, Ivybridge Recycling Centre, Brunel Road Recycling Centre in Newton Abbot, Knowle Hill Recycling Centre in Exmouth and Bideford Recycling Centre.

The new scheme follows the increasing popularity of the HWRC re-sale shops which have offered a range of household items at affordable prices for some time.

Public demand for re-sale shops to expand to include electrical items has grown, as budget savvy shoppers embrace the cost savings of buying re-conditioned goods.

Additionally more and more residents are becoming environmentally aware and have been asking DCC for ways that the electrical goods they see at HWRCs can be reused rather than sent for recycling.

All the goods are safety-checked and function tested and come with a 30-day guarantee.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Development and Waste, said: “Many people throw away perfectly usable electrical goods, when they upgrade to a new device, for example.

“I have been asked why we don’t do more to stop perfectly good items from being recycled when, with some safety tests, they could be used by someone else.

“We have listened and introduced this terrific scheme to get some of these products back into use and to a new home.

“The items are checked and tested and come with a 30-day guarantee, so come and grab yourself a bargain and help the environment at the same time!”

Rob Sanders, Regional Manager for SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK Ltd, which operates the HWRCs, said: “We’re excited to expand the range of products on sale at Devon’s reuse shops with electrical goods, supporting Devon County Council’s efforts to give more reusable items discarded at the recycling centres a second life. All electricals will be thoroughly checked and only those that pass the safety tests will be placed on sale.”
