Nursing director made Associate Professor

Congratulations to Greg Dix, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust Director of Nursing, who has been made Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences at Plymouth University.

Professor Dix, who commenced his role as Director of Nursing for the Trust in February 2013, said: “I am delighted to be appointed as an Associate professor and look forward to continuing my work within the university as well as my role as director here at Plymouth Hospitals.”

Professor Patricia Livsey, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, said: “We are delighted to appoint Greg to this position – one that cements our already strong relationship, based upon a mutual ambition to create a workforce that truly reflects the changing health needs, both locally and nationally. As an Associate Professor, Greg will bring his vast expertise and skills to the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences and will help us to more closely align our education and research not only with Derriford Hospital but with the wider local community.”

Professor Bridie Kent, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, added: “Greg has been a strong advocate for the School of Nursing and Midwifery for a number of years now and we have worked closely together to launch the  Clinical School at Plymouth Hospitals, an initiative with Plymouth University. It is great to see this recognition of his contributions to the University; his knowledge and skills will add significantly  to our staff and students as we work together to develop the future Nursing and Midwifery workforce.”

Having begun his Registered Nurse training in 1988, in Cardiff, he has also worked in Norwich and Oxford and for two years in New Zealand as a clinical nurse consultant and nurse educator.

On return to the UK, he was appointed as the senior charge nurse on an acute trauma unit at the University Hospital of Wales where he achieved his teacher training qualification from Cardiff University. Following this he also worked as a clinical nurse lecturer at the University of Wales College of Medicine and Senior Nurse at Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust.

Professor Dix relocated to Taunton with his family in 2007 and at the end of 2010 became the Director of Nursing and Governance at Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. He holds a master's degree in medical law and has a specialist interest in legal aspects of nursing and midwifery practice.
