New steps for South West Coast Path at Jennycliff
Plymouth City Council is installing new steps on the South West Coast Path near Jennycliff Bay, as part of a £24,000 repair programme for the popular walking route.
The refurbishment gets under way on Monday 3 February and will see the existing wooden steps, which have deteriorated considerably since they were installed in 1998, completely upgraded.
They will be replaced with new steps made of recycled composite plastic, which is more resistant to the elements and will last significantly longer. The repairs will also include new safety fencing, handrails and signage and the path itself will be widened and resurfaced, making it safer for walkers.
The repairs will further protect the pathway following steel mesh strengthening works on the bank in 2012.
Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The South West Coast Path is one of the world’s most beautiful national trails and hugely popular with walkers. However, its spectacular location means it is also at the mercy of the elements. This repair work, which will be finished in time for the spring, will help to protect the path in the longer term as well as make it safer for everyone to use.”
It is expected that the works, being carried out by local construction and landscaping company EVG Ltd, will be completed in March. In the meantime, walkers are asked to use the alternative route along Staddon Road.
