Local housebuilder helps Okehampton Air Cadets make a splash
A local Royal Air Force Air Cadet squadron has received a donation from Allison Homes South West, helping young people in Okehampton develop valuable leadership and teamwork skills.
The housebuilder has donated £500 to 2443 (Okehampton) Royal Air Force Air Cadet Squadron to support an adventure training day, which featured a range of water-based activities, including paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing and raft building.
The full-day event gave cadets the opportunity to put their teamwork and collaboration skills into practice while taking part in activities designed to build confidence, leadership and resilience.
The squadron provides opportunities for young people aged 12 to 20 to learn practical life skills in a disciplined and inclusive environment modelled on the Royal Air Force. Cadets take part in training programmes covering first aid, map reading, radio communications, cyber and coding, marksmanship, adventure training and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
The activity day forms part of the squadron’s wider leadership and teamwork programme, funded largely through their own year-round fundraising efforts. This year, the squadron will be taking part in a number of community fundraising events, including a bag pack at Waitrose, as well as attending the Rotary Summer Fair and the Okehampton Show.
Flight Lieutenant David Wilkinson, Officer Commanding at 2443 (Okehampton) Royal Air Force Air Cadet Squadron, said: “We are extremely grateful to Allison Homes for this generous donation. As a squadron, we rely on support from local organisations to help fund activities and opportunities that enable our cadets to develop important life skills.
“This funding directly supported our planned water-based adventure training day, giving cadets the chance to build confidence, strengthen their teamwork and leadership abilities and enjoy experiences that they may not otherwise have had access to. The support from Allison Homes has made a real difference.”
Glyn Mabey, Managing Director at Allison Homes South West, said: “At Allison Homes, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we build, and we are delighted to be able to contribute towards this fantastic initiative.
“The Air Cadets provides young people with opportunities to learn new skills, challenge themselves and make a positive contribution to their local community. We are proud to support the squadron, and we’re glad the cadets enjoyed a successful adventure training day.”
