The internationally renowned British Firework Championships takes place next Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 August 2013 on Plymouth Sound, the city’s spectacular, natural amphitheatre.

Six previous winners will go head-to-head to be crowned the ‘Champion of Champions’, firing their displays from the Mountbatten breakwater.

Local residents and tourists alike are expected to turn out to watch the Championships from a number of vantage points surrounding Plymouth’s expansive bay.

Destination Plymouth has provided its top five viewing spots for the British Firework Championships next week:

1. Plymouth Hoe is a classic fireworks viewing platform with spectacular views over Plymouth Sound. People begin to gather here and along Madeira Road from early evening, particularly if it’s warm; so to get a prime location, it is well worth getting there early.

The Hoe also offers live entertainment on both nights, including fairground rides and refreshment stalls which will open at 2pm daily, and music which will feature on the performance stage from 6.30pm each evening courtesy of Heart FM, with performances by local band Joker on Tuesday and Rockafella on Wednesday. Catering is also provided both on the Hoe and along Madeira Road.

2. The Mayflower Steps area of The Barbican is another great choice for those looking to watch the displays while enjoying an evening meal or drink at one of the many harbour-side restaurants and bars.

3. The Queen Anne’s Battery area is a marina within easy walking distance from The Barbican via the lock gate, which is popular with many spectators who can stand out on the breakwater, a stone’s throw from the Mount Batten firing base. Nearby Chandlers Bar and Bistro also offers great views from its outside terrace. www.chandlersbarandbistro.co.uk

4. Mountbatten provides a view from the Mountabatten pub for those who want to be at the forefront of the Fireworks action. This site is limited by the side-on view but offers a great 'behind the scenes' style experience as spectators can see the teams in action. www.hotelmountbatten.co.uk

5. Jennycliff is located high above Plymouth Sound and offers a more rural viewing site surrounded by woodland, beaches and cliffs. It is popular with those seeking to watch the displays from a viewpoint that looks towards Plymouth Hoe with the city itself providing a stunning backdrop for the fireworks.

Wherever you choose to watch British Fireworks Championships, thought to be Britain’s most spectacular fireworks display, make sure you don’t miss Plymouth’s free, explosive spectacular!
