Congratulations to Derriford Hospital's Maggs Shugar-Redman who has won the national ‘Supporting the Front Line’ WOW Award for her work for dementia patients.

Maggs, Healthcare Assistant on the hospital's Clinical Decisions Unit, received two nominations from colleagues to help her net the award.

She said: “I was so excited to win the wow award I am so passionate about dementia. I can’t thank Karen Grimshaw and Tim Parham for nominating me. It is a lovely feeling to know other people are as passionate as I am re dementia.”

The first nomination said: “As champion for older people in the clinical decisions unit (CDU), Maggs has led the developments of standards for people with dementia. She has done an amazing job in raising awareness of needs of people with dementia, ensuring the CDU has all the dementia standards in place and is leading on the dementia training for her team.

“She has undertaken ALL the South West learning modules on dementia and has put herself forward as a Dementia Friend Champion.

“Her enthusiasm and commitment to improving the care and experiences of people with dementia is second to none - she has led the dementia standards work to enable her team to really be dementia friendly; leading the way in terms of implementing and sustaining the commitment to high quality care for people with dementia in CDU - I am so very proud of her achievements, which have really made a difference to people with dementia who attend CDU.”

The second nomination said: “Maggs has used innovative ideas to trial dementia friendly cutlery for meal times.

Maggs is a truly wonderful person who has gone above and beyond to help create dementia friendly areas for the emergency services.”
