Chance to Win a Free Wildlife Cruise While Helping to Protect Local Birds
Nature lovers and day trippers have the chance to win a free Stuart Line Guided Bird Watching Cruise for two — just by learning & understanding a little more about the amazing birds that visit the Exe Estuary every year.
South East Devon Wildlife has launched a fun monthly competition as part of its call to ‘Let Birds Be’. The aim is to raise awareness of the incredible flocks of overwintering birds that rely on protected sites at Exmouth’s Duck Pond and Dawlish Warren in the Exe Estuary. Walkers and water users are urged to avoid the two Wildlife Refuges during this critical period (from 15 September to 31 December at Exmouth and all year-round at Dawlish Warren), as thousands of birds arrive to rest and feed after migrating up to 3,000 miles.
From 1st September to 30 November 2025, a winner will be randomly chosen each month to receive vouchers for a Stuart Line Guided Bird Watching Cruise for two. Simply answer the online questions and submit the entry form. If you don't win, you can try again next month.
Cllr Geoff Jung, Chair of the South East Devon Habitat Regulations Executive Committee and East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment - Operational, said:
“This is a great way to get people thinking about the amazing birdlife on our doorstep and how we can all do our part to protect it — while also offering the chance to enjoy it up close from the water.”
Jake Stuart, Stuart Line Cruises, said:
“We love seeing the Estuary come alive during the Winter months, transforming itself into a refuge for birds.
"We recognise the importance of the habitat for the many species that call it their home and as such, we are proud to support South East Devon Wildlife in their efforts to protect this important area.”
The competition forms part of wider efforts to encourage responsible visits to our nature reserves and coastal habitats. These sites are internationally important for rare and protected species, and small actions — like keeping dogs under control, picking up after dogs, sticking to paths, and giving birds space to rest and feed — make a big difference. Stuart Line Cruises offer the chance to see the very best wildlife the estuary has to offer, whilst avoiding the Exe wildlife refuges.
