Cash machine fire caused by oxy acetylene torch

Fire crews were called to extinguish a fire involving a cash machine at Carew Service Station in South Brent in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the incident by police and fire appliances from Buckfastleigh and Ivybridge attended.

Fire crews confirmed a small fire involving a cash machine at the petrol service station and report that the fire was caused by an oxy acetylene torch being used on the cash machine. The fire was extinguished using one dry powder extinguisher, a thermal image camera to check for hot spots, two breathing apparatus wearers and one hose reel jet.

One oxy acetylene torch and the adjacent cash machine was severely damaged by fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Service and Police.
